Bringing descendants together...
The project is to research and locate living descendants of the crew of the Austro-Hungarian Navy battleship, the SMS Szent István, to reunite in 2028 on the 110th anniversary of the ship's sinking in the Adriatic Sea.

The aim is a cross-county, cross-continental friendship and peace building initiative to showcase the multi-ethic, multi-lingual, and multi-cultural nature of this unique navy. It highlights a shared history and harkens back to the openness that was "the spirit of the Imperial Navy".

Background:

The Austro-Hungarian Navy was a multiethnic force, and its sailors came from all areas of the empire. The SMS Szent István was an Austro-Hungarian dreadnought battleship that sank on June 10, 1918, after being torpedoed by a Italian torpedo motor boat. At the time of her sinking 1,094 sailors where aboard. The attack resulted in the loss of 89 crew members, with 976 crew members surviving and 29 members with sustained injuries.
